IN SHORT:

Sex! Death! Money! Greed! Nudity!
,

Waking Ned Devine has everything you want, except for Big Name Stars or a Big Name Director. If nothing else, it is a totally disarming and delightfully funny story that comes out of nowhere and will have you splitting your sides in no time. To be honest, Cranky would have passed on the flick, but other critics insisted. He liked it so much that, with the aid of writer/director Kirk Jones and stars Ian Bannen and David Kelly, we're going to give y'all a  leg up. Start with the basics, below, then click on either star photo above, for more Cranky StarTalk!

Before we start: Read Cranky's Review
Step One: Meet writer director Kirk Jones

Kirk Jones

Jones: I come from Bristol, in the West Country, in England. Went to film school in Newport in Wales, then into the film industry in London. I could have followed the usual route, but I used my money to make test commercials, 'cuz I was really keen on becoming an commercial director.

Cranky: Did directing commercials help lay out and make WND?
Jones: I think so. I think it taught me the importance of keeping the audience's attention and making the story clear, tying up all the loose ends. At the script stage I would go back and read through and if nothing happens for 2 or 3 pages I'd work on that screen. I like saying I'm going in one direction and then switching to go in another.

Cranky: Did you giggle as much writing the script as the audience does when they see it?
Jones: As much as I giggled, I got quite depressed. Then I'd leave it a couple of months and come back and find it wasn't so bad. I'd giggle when I'd hit a problem and think "I know! I'll put a guy naked on a bike!"
Step Two:

Meet a naked guy on a bike!

That would be poor old Michael O'Sullivan (Kelly) caught in his skivvies when the lotto man comes looking for him. Or Ned Devine. The lotto man doesn't know, he just wants to give away the money and get home for dinner . . .

Ian Bannen: When it came to the motorbike riding it was harder on Kelly because I got me underpants on. David thought he'd have a g-string on but the camera could see it so off it had to come. The director told him "35 miles an hour and try to look scared." Well, he had no problem with that. His butt was sliding on the seat.

David Kelly: When it came to the day, faced with the reality of this thing, I was so scared and I was so cold, I kept sliding off the thing. It's going at 35 mpg. I was so terrified and cold that I didn't give a damn about the nude bit. I thought I'd be saying to Steve McQueen "you try making Bullit stark naked" Kirk said to me, "David we want you to look worried." No problem. I'd never been nude in public before. Not much in private either. But it may start a whole new game!

Now, meet the rest of the crew....

nesbitt.jpg (5272 bytes)
Farmer Pig Finn (James Nesbitt) wouldn't mind getting a piece of the money. He could buy soap and smelly things to take away the pig stink so he can woo his love . . .

lynch.jpg (5966 bytes)
Maggie (Susan Lynch), an unwed mother whose child might be his. Nobody knows and Maggie isn't telling.

flanagan.jpg (4767 bytes)
This is Annie O'Shea (Fionnula Flanagan), the long suffering and non-lawbreaking partner of Jackie O'Shea who, with partner Michael O'Sullivan and the rest of the town of Tully More is set on swindling the . . .

wnddempsey.jpg (4873 bytes)
Lotto Man Jim Kelly (Brendan F. Dempsey) out of Millions and Millions of British Pounds Sterling. Kelly could screw the scheme up of course, but . . .

wnddromey.jpg (5822 bytes)
Lizzy Quinn (Eileen Dromey), the nastiest witch in town has the nerve to take it all for herself! Anyone who gets in her way gets run down by her electric wheelchair!!!

Cranky would be more than happy to show you Ned Devine, but he's feelin' a bit poorly . . .
