IN SHORT: On the grand estate of Mansfield Park, young Miss Fanny Price (Frances O'Connor) yearns for the heart of Edmund (Miller?), but there are many other girls with whom she must compete... At the age of ten, Fanny Price is sent to live with wealthy relatives in Northamptonshire, leaving her impoverished family behind in Portsmouth. She has always known her debt of gratitude towards her aunt, Lady Bertram, and uncle, Sir Thomas. Her Aunt Norris, however, has always treated her as a servant and the preening Bertram daughters have always reminded her of her status. The youngest son Edmund has been Fanny's constant companion since her arrival at Mansfield Park. The arrival of the sophisticated brother and sister duo from London, Henry and Mary Crawford, sends the Park into a passionate upheaval as the daughters pursue Henry and Edmund is caught up in the rebellious spirit. Only Fanny refuses to fall under their spell. The fate of everyone at Mansfield Park is decided by an unspeakable scandal, and Fanny's patience is rewarded. Between the glut of other Oscar wannabees, conflicting previews scheduling, and holidays, we got behind. Mansfield Park is a bit slow, but with well defined characters, a cluster of tantalyzing sexual hints and subtle class warfare (sic) it falls under the $5.00 dateflick rating. Not for boy teens, unless their girlfriends are intellectual typoes who read Austen and Bronte and so on. No dissmail, please. I saw it in a full house and there were only a handful of 30somethings in the audience of elders. Those that know the book say it's a very loose adaptation of Jane Austen's original, but my impression was favorable. Yeah, not as detailed as usual, but it's Oscar-wannabe season and I got behind. More detail as soon as I can catch up
