CrankyCritic.com's Best of 1998

180 movies later, it's time for our historic annual event during which Cranky embarrasses the hell out out of his rep by telling you what he really thought of the movies of the year; who I really thought gave good performances and do the insanely masochistic practice of predicting the Oscar winners months before they're nominated or voted on.

How do I do it? It's December. I've seen 40 movies in the last month. I'm exhausted out of my mind and raving like a lunatic. In other words, business as usual.

The most surprising name I see on the private list I keep all year is Drew Barrymore, who placed three flicks on the lists, all in the Best Movie category, for her performances in The Wedding Singer, Ever After and Home Fries Other names showing up in more than one place on the list include John Travolta (for Primary Colors and A Civil Action) and Gwyneth Paltrow (for Sliding Doors and Shakespeare in Love). But we'll work our way up to them. Beginning at the bottom . . .

The Worst Movie of 1998

As much as I disliked things like Blade and A Night At The Roxbury, those films at minimum offered at least a couple of entertaining moments. Cranky didn't have to look far to find a flick that didn't even come close.

The most awful reel of celluloid to feature name stars was, in the words of the major New York TV critic who attended the same screening as Cranky, "a total waste of 90 minutes of my life." We'll have to wait and see if the Razzies have even heard of Dream for an Insomniac, starring Jennifer Aniston. Poorly made, poorly scripted, poorly acted, in sum, the worst film of the year.

And while we're on the topic of junk, For Your Referential Pleasure, the following is a list of every movie that received the coveted Zero Dollars rating from your humble servant, The Cranky Critic®

An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn Better this flick be burned, than the Big Orange

The Avengers was so awful, and I saw it while on vacation, that I didn't waste valuable beach time writing it up.

Woo Jada Pinkett is lovely. Your money was better spent on a poster. Now on to the good stuff . . .
