IN SHORT: Considering we don't give a whit about Victorian England, not a bad sit. [Rated PG for some mild sensuality, a scene of violence, and brief incidental language and smoking. 104 minutes] Beautifully produced and lavishly designed Young Victoria is one of the very few "small" historical films that didn't bore us silly. Add to that backhanded compliment the fact that the history covered is of absolutely no interest to an American audience and you've got a remarkable piece of work. We really couldn't give much of a hoot about the workings of European royalty a century ago and certain behind the scenes machinations regarding the political balance of power in England and how a royal marriage will affect the entirety of a fragile European blood royal alliance left us in the dust. Simply, King William of England (Jim Broadbent) is dying and young Victoria (Emily Blunt) is in line for the throne. Victoria's domineering mother (Miranda Richardson) and mother's lover (Mark Strong) can steal the throne, via devious legal means, at the stroke of a pen. Indeed, they've been planning such a move almost from the day of Victoria's birth. Failing that, mom tries to arrange a marriage that she can also control. Enter Prince Albert of Belgium (Rupert Friend) whose father, King Leopold (Thomas Kretschmann), is in cahoots with Victoria's mother. Albert doesn't particularly want to be a'courting and refuses to be pushed upon a woman who is not willing to be courted. Victoria happens to like that attitude. She agrees to communicate with Albert letter. Once the film gets its legs and focusses on that by-mail romance, and how said romance derails mom's best laid plans, things get very interesting. On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Ten Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to Young Victoria, he would have paid . . . $6.00If we cared a whit about Brit history, the rating would probably go much higher.
