The Night Listener

Starring Robin Williams, Toni Collette, Bobby Cannavale, Joe Morton, Cory Culkin and Sandra Oh
Screenplay by Armistead Maupin, Terry Anderson and Patrick Stettner
Based on the novel by Armistead Maupin
Directed by Patrick Stettner

IN SHORT: zzz. [Rated R. 82 minutes]

It's a personal peeve of mine that movies that rely on one character to explain "what it's all about" are the pits. It's sloppy writing, or at least that's what screenwriting teacher after teacher lectured us back in our school days. Even worse is the variation: "I looked it up on the Internet" or, in the case of The Night Listener, in a book. Fallling back on this kind of out essentially guts what had been an intriguing, attention grabbing mystery.

Robin Williams stars as Noone, a New York author and radio talker whose publisher asks him to read a remarkable first book by a 14 year old survivor of brutal physical and sexual abuse. Said kid is now living under a new name with a new stepmother and strikes up a long distance phone relationship with Our Hero. Our Hero, freshly dumped by former long term partner (Bobby Cannavale) determines to find the kid after said ex casually remarks that the whole backstory to the kid's story sounds phony.

On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Ten Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to The Night Listener, he would have paid . . .
