Nacho Libre

Starring Jack Black
Screenplay by Jared Hess, Jerusha Hess and Mike White
Directed by Jared Hess

IN SHORT: Great . . . if you're ten years old. [Rated PG for some rough action, and crude humor including dialogue. ]

That being said ... and we had two rows of ten year old kidlets sitting all around us having the bestest of times ... Jack Black's star turn as a non-midget Mexican wrestler called Nacho is about as funny as a wet sponge. We sat, and sat, and laughed all of once -- to spill the one joke in the film is to spoil the motivation for the film, so we won't -- and watched with envy as adult after adult after adult walked out of the free screening.

Pay close attention: it took three people to write one joke. We're sure that they thought they were doing much better but, nope.

Nacho (Jack Black) is an orphan, raised and now serving as a friar in whatever it is places where friars live are callede. Yeah, monks get monasteries. The only fryers we know come from a supermarket . . . Nacho cleans up after his brothers. Occasionally makes a run to do the messy stuff other brothers don't want to do (grownups will see this one joke coming a mile away). Cooks for the friars and the orphans in their care which, at dinner time, means beans and chips.

"Nacho Libre" = "Free Chip(s)," we think, though we wouldn't put much stock in our Spanish. "Nacho" should be "nachos" but that's beating a dead horse. We're just filling space. The bigger problem for Nacho is the appearance of a new teacher at the friar-age-stery-place-thingie, a ten on a scale of one to five nun by the name of Sister Encarnación (Ana de la Reguera, a dead on look alike for Penelope Cruz, IOHO) and the request of one of the orphans for [this is where the joke comes in. It's an Oliver moment, and that's all we'll say].

That request takes money. The only people making money in Nacho's universe are professional wrestlers. So, while none of the other friars are looking, Nacho finds a partner and enters the wide world of the wrestling ring -- midgets and all -- but it is the mighty champion, Ramses (Cesar Gonzalez) that must fall before Nacho can save the day.

On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Ten Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to Nacho Libre , he would have paid . . .

We're being kind because somewhere out there is a parent checking this site to see if the film is "appropriate" for their kid. We can only speak for the adult POV. Having no ten year old to treat with a preview screening certainly bites. So does the film
