In
the world of X-Men, Homo Sapiens live with a growing fear of so-called
Homo Superior, "mutants" who look just like "normal" people
but possess super-human abilities. Professor Charles Francis Xavier, a child of
privilege and wealth, is a telepath whose mind can do things his crippled body
cannot. His School for Gifted Students secretly teaches the next stage to use
their evolved abilities in pursuit of Xavier's "dream" of peaceful coexistence.
Holocaust survivor Eric Lensherr, aka Magneto, possessing magnetic control powers,
believes that humans will, like Hitler before, attempt to exterminate them. The
actions of the U.S. Congress, spurred by Senator Robert Kelly, lead him to believe
that a war is inevitable. These investigations will bring Xavier's student "X-Men"
into conflict with Lensherr's "Brotherhood." Neither Xavier nor Lensherr
nor Kelly will survive . . . undamaged.
Stan
Lee and Jack Kirby
created the X-Men. Len
Wein and Dave Cockrum
reconfigured the group. Chris
Claremont,
with Cockrum and then John
Byrne
(to start) kicked this band of superpowered misfits into the superhero stratosphere.
